Why the 2026 World Cup is different

The 2026 World Cup will be the largest in history. For the first time, 48 teams will compete — up from 32 since 1998. That means 104 matches across 39 days, from June 11 to July 19. It is also the first World Cup hosted by three countries at once: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Sixteen cities will host matches, including New York/New Jersey (where the final will be at MetLife Stadium), Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, Toronto, Mexico City, and Guadalajara. The expanded format introduces a new group stage with 12 groups of 4 teams, followed by a 32-team knockout round.

World Cup by the numbers

The World Cup has been held 22 times since its debut in Uruguay in 1930. Brazil leads all nations with 5 titles (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002). Germany and Italy have 4 each. Argentina has 3, most recently winning in Qatar in 2022 to give Lionel Messi his first World Cup. The highest-scoring tournament was 1998 with 171 goals across 64 matches — 2026 with 104 matches will almost certainly break that record. The all-time top scorer is Miroslav Klose of Germany with 16 World Cup goals across four tournaments.

The World Cup trophy

The current World Cup trophy was designed by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga in 1974. It stands 36.8 cm tall and weighs 6.175 kg, made of 18-karat gold with a base containing two layers of malachite (a green semi-precious stone). It depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. The original trophy, the Jules Rimet Trophy, was permanently awarded to Brazil in 1970 after their third win — and was stolen from a display case in Rio de Janeiro in 1983, never recovered. Unlike the Jules Rimet, the current trophy is never given away permanently. Winners receive a gold-plated bronze replica to keep.

The World Cup ball

The classic black-and-white soccer ball was designed for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. Called the Adidas Telstar, it used 12 black pentagons and 20 white hexagons so viewers could track the ball on black-and-white television. Before 1970, World Cup balls were plain brown leather. Every tournament since has had a unique ball design — the 2022 Al Rihla was the first to use water-based inks and glue, and the 2026 ball will be revealed closer to the tournament. A regulation ball weighs 410-450 grams and must be 68-70 cm in circumference.
