Viking longship

Viking longships were the fastest vessels of their era, reaching speeds of 15 knots under sail. The shallow draft — often less than 50 cm — let them navigate rivers far inland, which is how Norse raiders reached Paris and Constantinople. A typical longship held 30-60 warriors and could be carried overland between waterways. The overlapping plank construction (clinker-built) made the hull flexible enough to ride ocean swells without breaking apart.
