SLS rocket

NASA's Space Launch System is the most powerful rocket ever built, standing 98 meters tall — taller than the Statue of Liberty. The SLS produces 39.1 meganewtons of thrust at liftoff, 15% more than the Saturn V that carried astronauts to the Moon. Its orange core stage holds 2.7 million liters of liquid hydrogen and oxygen, flanked by two solid rocket boosters recycled from the Space Shuttle program. SLS launched the uncrewed Artemis I in 2022 and carried the Artemis II crew around the Moon in April 2026 — the first crewed lunar mission since Apollo 17 in 1972.
