Kawaii sushi coloring page
Modern nigiri-style sushi was invented in Edo (now Tokyo) around the 1820s by Hanaya Yohei as fast street food — a hand-pressed ball of vinegared rice topped with a slice of raw fish. The earlier narezushi, dating back over a thousand years, used fermented rice to preserve fish and the rice was thrown away. Kawaii, Japanese for "cute," is the design aesthetic that turns everyday food into smiling characters — the same look Sanrio popularized worldwide with Hello Kitty from 1974 onward.
