Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge spans the River Thames in east London and is often confused with London Bridge, which is a plain road bridge upstream. The bridge opened in 1894 after eight years of construction and was designed to let tall ships pass through to the Pool of London. The two bascules (the lifting sections) weigh over 1,000 tonnes each and originally ran on steam-powered hydraulics. The upper walkways sit 42 meters above the river and were originally open to pedestrians, but closed in 1910 due to lack of use — they reopened in 1982 as a tourist attraction, and glass floor panels were added in 2014.
