Colosseum

The Colosseum in Rome was completed in 80 AD and could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators. Its elliptical design measures 189 meters long and 156 meters wide, making it the largest amphitheater ever built. The outer wall originally stood 48 meters tall with four stories of arched entrances — 80 arches on the ground level alone, each numbered for ticket holders. The arena floor was covered in sand to absorb blood from gladiatorial combat. About two-thirds of the original structure has been destroyed by earthquakes and stone robbers over the centuries.
