Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge opened in May 1883 as the first steel-wire suspension bridge ever built. Its main span of 486 meters between two gothic stone towers was the longest in the world for two decades after completion. Designer John Roebling died months before construction began; his son Washington took over but was crippled by caisson disease, leaving his wife Emily to relay instructions to workers for the eleven years until the bridge opened.
