A polar bear walks across the ice with its powerful front paws spread wide for weight distribution on thin surfaces. Polar bears are the largest land carnivore, with adult males weighing 350 to 700 kg. Their fur appears white but each hair is actually a hollow, transparent tube that scatters light.
