Platypus coloring page
The platypus is one of only five living species of monotremes — mammals that lay eggs. Found exclusively in eastern Australia and Tasmania, it has a duck-like bill packed with electroreceptors that detect the electrical fields of prey underwater. Males carry a venomous spur on each hind leg, making the platypus one of the few venomous mammals. When European scientists first examined a preserved specimen in 1799, they thought it was a hoax — someone had sewn a duck's bill onto the body of a mole.
