American bison

American bison once numbered 30-60 million across the Great Plains. By 1890 hunting had reduced them to fewer than a thousand. Conservation pulled the species back; today around 30,000 live in conservation herds, with Yellowstone holding the largest free-roaming group. The bison was designated the United States' national mammal in 2016. A bull can weigh 2,000 pounds and run 35 mph despite the bulk.
