The American alligator lives in freshwater swamps, rivers, and marshes across the southeastern United States, especially Florida and Louisiana. Large males can grow over 4 meters long and weigh more than 450 kg. Their broad U-shaped snout sets them apart from crocodiles, which have narrower V-shaped snouts.
